GREENS WRITE TO KENT MPs on ENERGY BILLS

KENT PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Sunday 25th May 2008 - 27 Audley Avenue, Tonbridge, Kent TN9 1XF - www.kentgreenparty.org 0845 257 4236 – 01732 355185 – Mobile:
GREENS WRITE TO ALL KENT MPs about ENERGY BILLS AND FUEL POVERTY
Kent Green Party has written to all MPs for Kent and Medway expressing concern about rapidly rising fuel bills. Dr Hazel Dawe, Chair of Kent Green Party, comments:
“Kent Green Party notes with concern that fuel poverty has risen substantially since 2002. We also note that Allan Asher, the CEO of Energywatch, has indicated that consumers are faced with 'tacit collusion' over energy prices between suppliers meaning that the market in this sector is a 'myth (1)' These conditions - which we believe are related to peaks in oil and gas production and consumption - are creating conditions which will substantially increase indebtedness in the UK and move ever more households into fuel poverty. Society must be protected against any deliberate inflation of energy bills.
“Clearly, energy efficiency would be the cheapest option, although the Government does not have a task force(2) for this at present. Energy efficiency can reduce current energy use in the UK by 30% comparatively quickly and up to 50% over time (see Association for the Conservation of Energy website). But renewables need far more leadership and support than they are currently getting from UK Government (3). We have therefore asked Kent MPs to support the following:
1. Immediate increases in grants for insulation and renewable energy installation for homes and enterprises;
2. Feed in tariffs - payments to consumers for generating renewable electricity, following the German model;
3. Referring UK energy suppliers to the Competition Directorate of the EU with a view to future prosecution through the European Court of Justice.” Ends c 268 words
