KENT PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Monday 9th June 2008 – 60 Boxley Road, Maidstone, Kent ME14 2TW - 0797 0436 029

Stuart Jeffery, Campaigns Officer of Kent Green Party, has calculated that the loss of all Kent’s Labour MPs to the Conservatives will mean 53% of those voting will not get the party of their choice. Stuart Jeffery comments:
“Current opinion polls show a massive increase in Conservative support compared to their general election vote in 2005. The only way Labour MPs will be retained in Kent is if they introduce a fair, proportional system of election. Labour promised to investigate such options before it came to power in 1997, but the process was quickly halted after they entered Government.
“The current electoral system has made Kent into a ‘blue desert’ with all local councils under Conservative control. It seems very likely all parliamentary seats will go the same way, since all the Labour majorities in Kent are under 6000 votes and several are under 600.
“What faith can people have in politics if the electoral system remains the least fair in the European Union, delivering a one party state? Kent County Council has been Conservative-controlled since 1889, with one very brief intermission. Kent Green Party is alerting Kent’s Labour MPs to this scenario to encourage them to support a fair voting system, while they still have a chance to do so.”
