KENT COUNCILS: some progress towards energy efficiency

KENT PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Thursday 14th August 2008 - 27 Audley Avenue, Tonbridge, Kent TN9 1XF - www.kentgreenparty.org 0845 257 4236 – 01732 355185 – Mobile: 07747 036192

KENT COUNCILS:

SOME PROGRESS TOWARDS ENERGY EFFICIENCY

New figures just released by the Government show uneven progress by Kent councils towards energy efficiency in their housing stock (1). Under the Home Energy Conservation Act of 1995, the result of a Green Party-initiated campaign, Councils must increase the energy efficiency of their housing by 30% between 1996 and 2011. This effort forms a vital part of helping to keep energy bills down, a serious matter for council tenants throughout the County. This is how Kent’s councils compare:

COUNCIL PROGRESS TO TARGET IMPROVEMENT ON LAST YEAR
Ashford 21.5% 2.8%
Canterbury 28.3% 2.2%
Dartford 20.2% 1.4%
Dover 23.3% 3.2%
Gravesham 23.8% 2%
Maidstone 27.1% 2.4%
Medway 29.7% 3.7%
Sevenoaks 19.8% 2.3%
Shepway 19.4% 1.6%
Swale 27.5% 3%
Thanet 21.6% 3.2%
Tonbridge and Malling 26.3% 2.4%
Tunbridge Wells 23.1% 2.6%

Steve Dawe comments:
“To be on target, councils need to be at 22% improvement since 1996 - or more. This list shows 5 councils below that figure. Given rising energy bills, Councils should work with Registered Social Landlords to introduce solar water heating and solar panels to their housing stock, to help keep energy bills down – especially for the elderly and disabled. It is still true that some homes have just a dusting of insulation in the loft: a sure way of heating the sky, rather than the home.”
