PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
KINGSNORTH: ‘KENT GETS ITS OWN CHECKPOINT CHARLIE’
Dr Hazel Dawe, Chair of Kent Green Party, visited the Climate Camp at Kingsnorth yesterday evening (Tuesday). She found huge queues of people trying to enter the Camp, being held up by police controls. No one can enter the site without being frisked by the police and having their bags searched. They are then given a ‘pink ticket’ which is checked repeatedly before you can actually enter the Camp. Dr Dawe found this reminiscent of Communist era border crossings. She notes:
“Trish Marchant, a Medway Green Party member, has christened the facility near the Camp ‘Checkpoint Charlie’ after the crossing point in Communist era Berlin between East and West.
“It is ludicrous that I cannot walk 200 yards down a country lane in Kent without showing a pass to the Police. This reminds me of the Government’s discredited ID card scheme.
“What this Camp and its residents are doing is the most important environmental action in the UK at the present time. In opposing a coal-fired power station, they are fighting climate change. This is a fight the Government makes speeches about but is seemingly reluctant to engage in. The UK has amongst the worst records for energy efficiency and energy from renewables in Europe.
“The duty of the police is to uphold the rule of law. That includes allowing and indeed enabling peaceful protest. The police at Kingsnorth appear to be doing everything in their power to discourage people from attending the Climate Camp instead of enabling them to attend and upholding their right to peaceful protest.”
