KENT GREENS CONGRATULATED FOR ETHICAL INVESTMENT CAMPAIGN

KENT PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Thursday 25th September 2008 www.kentgreenparty.org 60 Boxley Road, Maidstone, Kent ME14 2TW – tel: 01622 808370mobile: 07970 436029
KENT GREENS CONGRATULATED FOR ETHICAL INVESTMENT CAMPAIGN
Kent Green Party has been congratulated by the Campaign Against Arms Trade following the decision by Kent County Council to start to incorporate ethics into their investment policy. KCC have decided to include the United Nations' Principles of Responsible Investment(1) into their policies but continue to state that economic decisions outweigh ethical ones and continue to maintain their shares in arms manufacture. Unison, CAFOD(2) and CAAT and Kent Green Party have been putting pressure on the County Council to bring ethics into their huge investments.

Stuart Jeffery, Green Party prospective parliamentary candidate for Maidstone and the Weald: "This decision by Kent County Council represents a small but welcome step in the right direction to bring ethics into their investments. The wide range of groups campaigning to clean up the council's policies have clearly had an impact but the council still needs to go further. The UN's Principles of Responsible Investment increase the openness of investments and ensure that ethical are at least considered by KCC, which is great in itself. Sadly the council maintains its stance that financial considerations outweigh all others so we will continue to campaign to get them to disinvest from the obvious unethical industries such as arms manufacture and tobacco.”
