COUNCILS SHOULD TAKE THEIR FOOTPRINT

Kent Green Party praises Ashford Borough Council for commissioning research to establish its overall ecological footprint. The Party has written to other local councils in Kent asking them to do the same. Information from such a process will help our councils use their very scarce resources more effectively. Steve Dawe comments:

“Ecological footprinting can reduce waste, encourage re-use of materials and lead to cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. If should be standard procedure for all local councils to commission ecological footprints of their areas, but it is not yet law. We urge local councils in Kent to follow Ashford’s lead, because it is clearly a path towards greater efficiency and ecologically-sustainable development.

“There is, however, one major problem for our councils in reducing their ecological footprint. Kent County Council’s Local Transport Plan promotes the management of increases in traffic throughout the County. Increases in air pollution, noise, waste of resources in short journeys – all of these follow from the KCC approach. Until our local councils can persuade KCC to adopt traffic reduction measures, especially in urban areas, a large part of the ecological footprint in each area will not be addressed.”
