NOISE: the neglected public health issue

KENT PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 16th November 2008 - 27 Audley Avenue, Tonbridge, Kent TN9 1XF - 0845 257 4236 – 01732 355185 – 07747 036192

Noise is one of the most consistently neglected public health issues. For Kent and Medway, traffic growth and aviation expansion both depend upon the public tolerating even more noise than they do already, despite the health effects. Steve Dawe notes:

“The European Parliament’s Industry Committee has rejected very modest noise policies which would have removed the noisiest tyres from use no later than 2018(1). Since half of the EU’s population is exposed to noise levels likely to damage their health, according to World Health Organisation standards, this is not a minor issue. On 2nd December 2008, the Internal Market Committee of the European Parliament will vote on this issue. Kent Green Party urges the public to write to their Members of the European Parliament immediately, to prevent further weakening of noise policies. Go to: to find your MEPs.”
