MANSTON: THE MYTHS OF PLANNED EXPANSION

KENT PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 19th December 2008 - 27 Audley Avenue, Tonbridge, Kent TN9 1XF - www.kentgreenparty.org 0845 257 4236 – 01732 355185 – Mobile: 07747 036192

MANSTON:
THE MYTHS OF PLANNED EXPANSION

Kent Green Party has delivered a very critical submission to the consultation on the Draft Masterplan for Manston Airport. The Draft Masterplan takes no account of the contraction in the civil aviation industry in recent months. This was occurring before the current recession encouraged less holidays and more of them in the UK. Nevertheless, Kent Greens believe the Manston site does have employment potential for the future. Steve Dawe comments:

“The Draft Masterplan for Manston Airport makes an extraordinary effort to ignore the recent airline closures, contractions of services and mergers occurring in the civil aviation industry over the last few years. Coupled with the current recession which is already beginning to reduce the number of flights being taken, plans for Manston Airport to expand are – literally – ‘flights of fancy.’

“Fortunately, less ambitious and more realistic uses of the Manston site are possible. Kent Green Party has recommended that the owners consider leisure facilities for the site, bearing in mind initiatives taken at Dreamland in Margate and in other Thanet coastal towns to improve leisure options in East Kent. Some of the site could be returned to agriculture, following the exemplary efforts of the Wye Community Farm to engage more people in agriculture. There are always calls for more allotments, and seed sales for growing food have risen dramatically in the last couple of years. Why shouldn’t Manston have much quieter and less polluting contributions to make to the well-being of East Kent in future?”
