1% for COUNCIL WORKERS IS NOT ENOUGH

KENT PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 23rd January 2009 - 27 Audley Avenue, Tonbridge, Kent TN9 1XF - www.kentgreenparty.org 0845 257 4236 – 01732 355185 – 07747 036192

1% FOR COUNCIL WORKERS IS NOT ENOUGH
Kent Green Party condemns the recent Kent County Council offer of a pay rise of 1% to its staff represented by UNISON. Steve Dawe comments:

“Inflation is at 3.1% and teachers have been offered 2.5%. Bearing in mind existing scarcities of employees with skills and the presence of too many low paid jobs in our economy, the suggested 1% pay award is a step too far by the County Council. Kent Green Party is concerned that other public sector and private sector bodies may follow with equally derisory pay offers. This will cause further widening in the enormous UK gap between rich and poor. It also runs the risk of encouraging those with transferable skills to look for new employment by employers who would place more value on their work.

“The County Council is open to the charge that it is planning to deliver a low council tax increase at the expense of its staff. They should think again, or face the consequence of the strike action that UNISON members are already considering.”
