KENT PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 16th January 2009 - 27 Audley Avenue, Tonbridge, Kent TN9 1XF - www.kentgreenparty.org 0845 257 4236 – 01732 355185 – 07747 036192
KENT GREENS SUPPORT DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST ATTACKS ON GAZA
Kent Green Party is supporting two demonstrations in Kent this Saturday 17th January, being held in opposition to the attacks upon Gaza. These demonstrations, organised by local Stop the War Coalition groups, are:
1. TUNBRIDGE WELLS: Assemble at 12.00 noon at the Millennium Clock to March to Calverley Fields
2. WHITSTABLE: Assemble: 12noon outside Whitstable Library, Oxford St. Whitstable.
Kent Green Party is also calling for businesses operating in Kent to boycott trade with Israel, because of its disproportionate violence in Gaza. The Party is urging withdrawing investment from Israel, an end to tourism and a no more arms supplies from the UK to the country. Steve Dawe comments:
“Kent Green Party believes that Israel’s defiance of yet another United Nations resolution(1), calling upon it to engage in a ceasefire, justifies increased efforts by the UK to put effective pressure on Israel. By this we mean a boycott of Israeli goods and tourism, companies operating in Kent withdrawing investment – when they have investments in Israel – and an end to UK arms supplies that are implicated in attacks upon civilians.
Clearly, we want both sides to support a ceasefire. But after 60 years of human rights abuses inflicted upon Palestinians by the Israeli authorities, we need Israel to agree to a comprehensive peace plan that allows Palestinians to live in peace and to return to their homes in both the Occupied Territories and in Israel itself. The original UN process which created Israel was never intended to mean driving Palestinians out of Israeli held territory (2).”

1. SECURITY COUNCIL CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE, DURABLE, FULLY RESPECTED CEASEFIRE IN GAZA LEADING TO FULL WITHDRAWAL OF ISRAELI FORCES -
Resolution 1860 (2009) Adopted by 14 in Favour, Abstention by United States; Also Calls for Unimpeded Humanitarian Assistance, Welcomes Egyptian Initiative
Israel has not complied with a variety of UN resolutions, especially resolution 242 calling upon Israel to withdraw from the Occupied Territories.
2. Over 700,000 Palestinians were driven out of their homes when Israel was established. Palestinians are not permitted to return to their homes within Israel and may also be denied entry to the Occupied territories of Gaza and the West Bank. This is a breach of the UN Charter which gives everyone the right to leave and to re-enter their own country. SEE: Ilan Pappe – The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine.
