GREENS OFFER CHALLENGE TO GOVERNMENT OVER RECESSION
Canterbury Green Party campaigners and European Election candidates will be campaigning in Canterbury town centre, in the area near the Library, from 12.30 on Saturday 28th February. They will be stressing the need for better Government policies to counter the recession. Geoff Meaden, Green Party Parliamentary Candidate for Canterbury, says:
“The Government must fund education expansion to allow people to study in further and higher education rather than be on the dole. It must ensure that energy efficiency is pursued to reduce energy wastage. It must support the growth of allotments, small holding and organic farming for both health and employment reasons. Above all, it should be ensuring that the effort to reduce the greenhouse gases which contribute to climate change is stepped up. This means promoting the rapid conversion of surface transport to the use of electricity and other non-polluting options. It must also ensure that local government receives a larger share of public spending, by abandoning costly and avoidable expenditure like the planned ID card and the renewal of the Trident nuclear weapon system.
“Taken together, these steps would constitute a Green New Deal for our country. Greens will be leafleting and discussing these options with the public on 28th February, because there are positive alternatives to the Government’s current failing policies.”
