PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 30TH May 2009 - 27 Audley Avenue, Tonbridge, Kent TN9 1XF - 0845 257 4236 – 01732 355185 – Mobile: 079444 71083

Dr Hazel Dawe, Chair of Kent Green Party and a Euro-Candidate for the South East Region, is emphasising the sort of constitutional changes we need to reform Parliament, and the benefits this will have for Kent:

“There is no possibility of change in Parliament until 10% of people voting for a Party means they get 10% of the seats in Parliament. The German Additional Member System (AMS) of Proportional Representation would be best. Governments could then only govern with the support of more than half the country’s voters. Applying the same system to Kent and its district councils would end the long-term single party dominance and create real choice in elections.

“The Green Party also believes there should be fixed term parliaments - 4 years, except where a government loses a vote of confidence with a system of Recall, to allow voters to remove MPs and a fully elected Second Chamber to replace the House of Lords. Greens want state funding for political parties to eliminate the present system of legalised corruption; a voting age of 16 to engage young people with the political process and a written constitution guaranteeing our rights and indicating our responsibilities as citizens. These measures would mean Kent’s voters could expect a far more responsive political party system.

“But decentralisation is also necessary to reduce the ridiculous centralisation of power at Westminster. We need more power and funds for local government; a Register of interests for MPs and senior civil servants and full transparency of decision-making processes. We should have referenda on selected issues.”
