PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –18th July 2009 - 27 Audley Avenue, Tonbridge, Kent TN9 1XF - 0845 257 4236 – 01732 355185 – Mobile: 07747 036192

Steve Dawe, Press Officer of Kent Green Party, spoke to Friday’s demonstration in Gillingham against a 3G phone mast which has been erected next to St.Mary’s Catholic Primary School. All local political parties and Medway Council were against this development. Speakers from the area’s four main parties addressed a rally of well over 300 parents and children from the school, including Paul Clark MP. Steve Dawe, in his speech to the rally, said:

“What’s more important, our children or our mobile phones? The opinion of independent experts over many decades has been that low-level radiation can be harmful, particularly to children. The debate about low-level radiation started when nuclear power came into existence and now continues concerning mobile phones as well. Putting profit before people is bad enough: taking a cavalier attitude to children’s health is completely unacceptable.

“So far, the Government’s attitude has been to side with the telecommunications industry. Little wonder that your Green Member of the European Parliament, Caroline Lucas, has supported campaigns concerning phone masts all over the South East Region. The Planning Policy Guidance about mobile phone masts dates back to 2001. It is high time it was revised. This campaign can be won – don’t give up!”
