Tonbridge and Malling Green Party has launched the Green Party Candidate for the Tonbridge County By-Election. Dr Hazel Dawe, Chair of Kent Green Party, has been selected. She says:

“The Coalition Government is cutting spending and services for Kent, but not collecting taxes which would help to protect spending and services. Last year (1), HM Revenue and Customs has recently admitted, £42 billion in taxes known to be due were not collected. Since the Government also declines to close tax havens on UK territory (2), it is clearly not attempting to protect public spending or jobs.
“Our County Council plans 1500 job losses at a time when its provision for children has been severely criticised. It has a transport plan which emphasises massive capital spending on a new Dartford Crossing for about £1 billion, when it is not maintaining pavements or roads properly throughout the County.

“The Green Party believes services and jobs can be secured and spending on education, social services for the elderly and for young people can all be increased. Collecting taxes and ensuring a fair taxation system are possible, and will reduce the Deficit: it is a matter of having the political will to do a better job than the Coalition Government offers. The Green Party believes better targeted public spending in Kent will both protect essential County Council jobs and, because of the spending of County employees, ensure continuing jobs in the private sector as well.” Ends c 247 words
