Kent Green Party is warning Kent's farmers off Genetically Modified crops, challenging the uninformed enthusiasm of Secretary of State for the Environment, Owen Paterson. Steve Dawe(1) comments:
"Kent's farmers would be well advised to ignore the new enthusiasm of the Secretary of State for the Environment for Genetically Modified crops(GMOs)(2). Owen Paterson appears to have failed to consider the immense costs to farmers and the environment which have occurred wherever GM crops have been introduced.
"Genetically modified crops have been shown to radically increase the need for and the cost of inputs for farming, drastically increasing the costs for farmers. Claims of increased yields for GM crops have been shown repeatedly to be false. Claims that GM engineered pesticides and herbicides would control weeds and pests have been refuted as super-weeds and super pests have acquired resistance to them. The US Department for Agriculture has said that conventional crops are available that are resilient in the face of climate change, rejecting claims that GM crops are supposedly needed for this purpose. GMOs in general have been demonstrated to be toxic or to cause allergies in a wide variety of plant and animal species(3).
"Kent needs a diverse, mixed increasingly organic agriculture system including increased forestry, and more allotments in all areas. Our expanding network of farmers markets is just a start to the employment this could bring to our County(4). No one needs GM crops."
