Lydd: Close the Airports, open leisure centres

Kent Green Party is appalled by the Government's decision to permit airport expansion at Lydd. The Party is equally disturbed by the continuation of attempted expansion of Manston Airport. Kent Green Party believes both sites are suitable for prime leisure developments instead. Steve Dawe comments:
"The Government decision to expand Lydd Airport and Kent County Council's continuing enthusiasm for the economically faltering Manston Airport ignore environmental and economic realities.
"The public have no legal right to protection from aircraft noise (1). Aircraft add to local air pollution, and to greenhouse gas emissions. Aircraft disturb and displace bird populations, many of which are in decline in the UK at present. And the local environment around Lydd contains both one functioning and one retired nuclear power station and associated radioactive materials as well as a wind farm with new wind turbines being proposed. The area is in consequence hazardous for aviation expansion involving heavier, larger aircraft than currently use Lydd(2).
"Airports generate very few jobs for the space they occupy, compared to possible all-weather leisure centres on the same sites. So this decision is wrong environmentally and economically. Kent Green Party welcomes news that legal challenges are to be mounted against this decision."
