Supermarkets let down customers over GMs

Kent Green Party is disturbed to find that major supermarkets are allowing more GM materials into the food chain. Dr Hazel Dawe, Campaigns Officer for Kent Green Party, reports:
"After the horse meat scandal, we might think supermarkets would want to rebuild trust with their customers. However, despite public opposition, they are allowing more GM materials into our food. On 12th April, Sainsbury's, Marks and Spencer and the Co-operative ended their previous bans on using suppliers that give Genetically Modified feed to the livestock from which they sell eggs, cheese, yoghurt, milk and meat. Tesco have done the same with chicken feed. Morrisons and ASDA apparently have no GMO-free animal feed policies. Other supermarkets remain silent on their policies. Waitrose claim to be anti GM and not to use GM feed, but they sell patented salad/veg crops from a subsidiary of Monsanto.
"In short, whatever our preferences,
people are now feeding themselves and their families genetically modified organisms.
"The only people actually avoiding GMs completely are organic-only consumers, vegans, and those who are self-sufficient, or can completely avoid supermarkets. If we want Kent's agricultural land to remain free of GM crops, we need to ensure major retailers eliminate the use of GM animal feed and other GM crops.
"All key claims made about GM crops have been found to be inaccurate(1). Kent Green Party urges consumers to write to supermarkets demanding that GM ingredients are not used in animal feed in any of their products(2)."

"In 2009, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) stated that, "Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with genetically modified (GM) food," including infertility, immune problems, accelerated ageing, faulty insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. The AAEM has asked physicians to advise all patients to avoid GM foods"
