Greens win first Kent County councillor

The Green Party has gained its first Kent County Councillor with a stunning victory in Hythe. Martin Whybrow gained 1659 votes (34.77 per cent) and a majority of 313 to displace the Conservatives. The Green Party ran a high-profile, positive campaign.

Martin Whybrow says: "This was a tremendous team effort and I am so pleased for the many people who were part of it. We provided an attractive, clear alternative for people who were frustrated on a range of local and national issues. Here, at least, this was not a protest vote, it was far more subtle than that, we engaged with a wide range of residents, including public support from our highly regarded, outgoing Tory councillor."

To put the victory into perspective, this was the first time the Green Party had fielded a candidate for KCC in Hythe; in 2009, the Conservatives had gained 2771 votes, with a majority of over 1500.

Martin adds: "I believe this breakthrough is just the start of a change in politics in Shepway and, I hope, across the rest of Kent and Medway. There are so many potentially excellent Green Party councillors out there and I am sure I am the first of many."
